RC Toys Are For Ages 6 to 60

Despite a common misconception that radio controlled toys are made only for kids, enthusiasts know that there are whole categories of RC machines that are far too complicated, not to mention too dangerous, for all but older teenagers and adults. Age recommendations for operating RC toys range from as young as six years old to 18 and over, and skill levels needed to control them from beginner to expert. The more basic RC models, characterized by simplicity of operation and limited performance capabilities, can be seen in toy and department stores, Wal-Mart’s and Targets, all across the country. Faster, more sophisticated and highly maneuverable RC toys are typically found only in your better hobby stores or through Internet searches for online retailers.

Hobby-grade RC helicopters are arguably the most complex and demanding of all radio controlled toys. Perhaps not surprisingly, they also happen to be among the most expensive. Complicated from an aerodynamic design standpoint, constructed of a myriad of precision, integrated components—motors, shafts, advanced lithium-polymer batteries and a variety of rotor schemes—hobby-grade copters are demanding, high performance toys and are unsuitable for young children. The more sophisticated 6, 8 or 10-channel models are able to instantly change the direction of their thrust, allowing them to fly inverted, and perform amazing aerobatic and 3D stunts. Since a single crash can set the owner back several hundreds of dollars, even more if the copter is damaged beyond repair, flying these particular radio controlled toys requires dedication, long hours of practice and a true passion for the hobby or sport.

Radio Controlled Planes Are a Good Introduction to RC Flying

Newcomers to flying radio controlled toys are typically advised to start out with an airplane, as they are inherently less stable and easier to master than helicopters. Those models built from scratch are highly customizable but can take weeks or months to piece together. Newcomers usually purchase Almost Ready to Fly kits, with additional components and some assembly required, or Ready to Fly models, preassembled with components installed and lacking only batteries for the receiver. Typical beginner models are controlled with a three-channel transmitter, featuring three inputs--variable thrust, rudder l and elevator controls. More experienced pilots add more control surfaces, such as ailerons. Ailerons allow for tighter turns, enhancing maneuverability and making the plane more interesting (and difficult) to fly.

For those who think they may lack the skill or simply the desire to fly RC aircraft, ground or water-based radio controlled toys may be more desirable. RC boats are capable or zooming over water of almost any depth. Remote controlled cars, trucks, motorcycles and even tanks are other options for your enjoyment. Whether your interest is strictly casual, or you seek to become involved on the hobby level, you’re sure to find an RC toy that fits your needs (and pocketbook) and provides you with hours of exhilarating fun.

When I was a child my younger brothers used to glue model airplanes together and so did my husband when he was a child. These new radio controlled toys would have intrigued them had they been available back then. That top helicopter video is crazy! I can see why it is labeled "Sit up and Talk!" Haha!

I glued model airplanes, cars and ships when I was young...I can still smell the Testor's glue--that was strong-smelling stiff!
